Slave Drive for Hard Drive

My hard drive crashed on my desktop pavilion (I have windows 7 if this is important) and I have a lot of stuff I need on there....I plan on purchasing another hard drive with the same memory etc. I don't want to transfer everything just images and some documents in case a virus caused the old hard drive to stop reading or crash. Do I need an extra cable and what kind do I need? What is it called?

A virus cannot cause a hard drive to break.

after you reinstall windows on the new hdd simply hook the other drive to another sata port and power cable and if the drive is recognized by windows you should be able to pull your data off of it.if it isnt recognized by windows you may be going to a data retrieval place which can be expensive.ive see free programs that claim to be able to get your data off the drive but havent seen much,if any success using them.
