Me and my brother want to build a relatively powerful pc that can play games at 1080p. The only issue is that the case is about 2 3/4 inches deep. So the size of the case will be a limiting factor. My brother is going to get an old "fake" external hard drive from the 1980s to hide the psu inside. I think we can rig it up with some case cutting for the cpu cooler to be able to intake fresh air through some vents. We could possibly fit a gpu vertically, with a blower cooler. Then we could cut an exhaust port in the back for a 40mm exhaust fan, or two. What do you guys think, ideas?

It would be possible to do that, but the only thing is that it would require more case cutting to get a place where we could mount the psu, have intake, and exhaust so it doesnt choke. Also, how could we mount motherboard standoffs?
