Sli 670 or wait for 700 series?

i am currently running a evga 670 ftw ( http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=02G-P4-2678-KR ) in my build and was recently told they have stopped manufacturing this and a few other types of gpu's. to get down to it, i feel my options are i buy a second one of my gpu's for sli and keep it right through till the 800 series come out, or i wait and and sell my current gpu and buy a new 770 or whatever they decide to call it. will i get more performance out of 2 670's or one 770?

aswell, price wise i am thinking the 770 will be $500 upwards while the 670 ftw right now is $450 with tax and shipping

any help with the matter is greatly appreciated

I would go with 670 sli that what i have now and there is not agame i can not max out why wait i agree with you the new cards will cost more.

I'll eat my own face if GTX770 beats two GTX670s in SLI. That would have to be an absolutely colossal improvement over GTX670 to compete with two of them. We're probably looking at ~30-35% gain based on previous generation gains (~30% on GTX470 over GTX275, ~25% on GTX570 over GTX470 and ~40% on GTX670 over GTX570).

EDIT: Also, nVidia's roadmap implies GTX800 (Maxwell I think it's called) will be a far bigger step forward than GTX700.

SAM_P_Play makes an excellent point. One which I forgot about. Per Nvidia's roadmap they will be introducing no new architectural changes until the 'Maxwell' chips in 2014. These will most likely be the GTX800 series and should offer a much more significant performance boost.

i remember seeing this roadmap, i believe i also remember hearing nvidia say there will be no 700 series until next year so it will probably be implemented into them. that jump looks like a pretty significant one, if not more than double the performance?

the performance jump from 600 to 700 series will not be big. it is more like 400 to 500 series performance upgrade. remember the 700 series is still kepler based and using the same node as 600 series (28nm). for the 700 series nvidia might release their compute beast chip (GK110) as part of geforce lineup. if i remember correctly the rumor from 3dcenter suggesting that the flagship will be based on GK110 and GTX760Ti will use GK114. if the rumors are true then it is possible the upcoming GTX760Ti will be as fast as current GTX680.

about the pricing it depends it might depend how amd want to price their card as well. but from 400 series to 600 series nvidia single gpu MSRP has been $499. for the 670 i think nvidia might be able to launch it at $349 (just like 470 and 570) but they put it around 400 to match competitor price/performance. the only difference between nvidia and amd is nvidia rarely drop their price after product launch. they do drop their price but it is nowhere as aggressive as amd are.

i think nvidia will release 700 series based on kepler architecture just so they have a product that can compete with amd 8000 series. Maxwell most likely get into 800 series but it is too early to say anything about maxwell. Maxwell should be based on 22nm node but i don't know if TSMC will be ready to employ 22nm node on large scale in 2014. i already heard some rumor that Maxwell might be stuck with 28nm node. maybe the low end will be based on 28nm and the high end one will be based on 22nm.

also many people got it wrong when they see the chart above. it is not raw performance increase but it was performance per watt increase when you move the architecture forward.

Nvidia's 7xx series will be like how someone above posted, much like the gain between the 4xx and 5xx series. It's just a filler so they have some new GPUs to compete with AMD's 8xxx series. You will see bigger gains in performance once Nvidia's 8xx series comes out in 2014.

That is true but they're either saying power consumption decreases, or performance increases. What's more likely, 1/3 the power consumption or 3x the performance? It'll probably be a bit of both, but that's still huge gains on both sides. Obviously real-world gaming performance is unlikely to be a 3x gain 🙂

I think you should look at it also from the vantage point when are you looking to purchase your card. If you are wanting a card now you may want to look for a card that will last a while a 670 in theory should last you for a while of the nvidia cards that I know of people are still rocking 480's maybe not as much but they are still people doing just fine with them. If you are thinking hey in march I'll look then perhaps its a good idea to wait. Also keep in mind that the MAXWELL Architecture has changed time wise so its hard to say when it will come out. This was back in 2010 versus the 2011 the updated 2014 projection.

Also, sam makes a good point with the architecture map. With the MAXWELL chips that could be around the same time the intel chips make the performance increase, because haswell is mainly circled around power consumption.

Not being rude but you're wrong. A GTX 670 SLI is much more faster than 25% over a GTX 680. A GTX 660 TI OC SLI is 30% faster than a GTX 680. A GTX 670 OC SLI would be about 45% faster.

There will always be something bigger and badder buyers remorse is something you can't get rid of. Say you do wait and get a 700 series card then the 800 series cards will come out and if they lite the house on fire you'll be upset that you didn't wait for them. In my opinion you should buy a card where you feel like it will have some validity 2 years down the road at least and then start planning your way for a more leet card. You'll stress yourself out fighting over that. However, if you plan on waiting a few months to buy your card you wise as well wait for the 700 series as it will be coming out around there and who knows if its out of your price range you can get the 600 series cards on the cheap win win I'd say.

yea very true, you pretty much hit the dot on this one. ive been stressing over the different factors in which decision will be better but we will never know till its definite what they are making, i will wait and see
