Sli Crossfire Compatibility

I have a few questions about sli, crossfire and dx12

1. can I sli and or crossfire on any mobo (unkown asus 1155 chipset board)?
2. can any gpu sli and or crossfire? specifically r7 370, r9 380, gtx 960
3. what gpu's can r7 370, r9 380 crossfire with if they can
4. can dx12 multi gpu work with any gpu or just ones that are crossfire/sli compatible
5. is there a limit on crossfire/sli gpus or is it all up to 4 gpu's

1.need to know the board.
2. no no all but a R9 370 and 380 can crossfire, and an 960 can SLI both up to 2 way from what I remember.
3. only one of the same type (core), EX. R9 290X and R9 290X
4.works on all DX 12 compatable cards reguardless of crossfire / SLI support
5.if it is an R9 390/390X/290/290X it can go four way, 980s can go four way as can titans and 980tis. pretty much flagship level cards only can do 4 way the rest up to 2 way.

for number 4 would i just put the into my mobo and thats it?
also if my mobo has support for multi gpu would it be sli and crossfire compatible or just one

well SLI can be more picky. also it depends, most mid range motherboards support two way. higher end ones can do three to four way. but really the best boost is at two way, in three way frame rates can actually drop. for older cards you might need a crossfire or SLI bridge, for new AMD cards, you do not need a crossfire bridge.

Not enough info about dx12 multi GPU yet to know whether it's just plug n play or if more complicated setup is required. Multi GPU would still require 2 PCIe slots running in at least x8, x8 mode, such mobos usually already support CF, and most of those will also support SLI.

To answer #2 and #3, I believe you can CF cards of the same GPU core (Grenada, Fiji, Tonga, Tahiti, etc...) such as CFing a R9 380 with R9 285 (both Tonga) or R7 370 with R9 270(x) (both Curacao). Nvidia is a different story though, SLI only works on the same GPU.
