SLI Different Models of VIdeocards?

Can I connect any 2 videocards for example my old GTX980TI and an upcoming GTX1080 - or should gtx980 go into a rubbish bin?

As of right now, you cannot run 2 different chipsets of GPUs. You would need to run 980TI/980TI or another combo of cards. This will change later when DX12 is mainstream but that wont be for a little while. Its not really Nvidias fault for this.
