SLI GTX 970's are cheaper and just as if not more powerful than a GTX 980 ti

The nvidia gpu line is scarring me right now.
With all the new cards I was going to get a 980 ti. But then after seeing JayzTwoCents video.

In non sli optimized games the 980 ti barely offers a fps boots over the sli 970's.
In well sli optimized games the 970's win almost always. (Excluding games that demand video memory.)

So just for the hell of it I did some amazon(ing) and found that a STRIX 970 is $350(usd) and a gtx 980 ti at its lowest is around $740 or on average is $800. And that really got me thinking.

If 2 STRIX 970's are ~$700 then on average your spending an extra 100 dollars for (the gtx 980ti) a card that at its best can match or get an extra 1 - 5 fps over the 970 counterpart.

Would anyone care to correct me if im wrong but this is seeming very odd.

What the benchmarks fail to tell you is that in non sli optimized games, multiple card configurations may cause microstuttering while gaming. And with that amount of money spent, you would want to turn on all the filters, in which case the extra 2.5GB of v-ram of the 980ti will most certainly come in handy for future demanding titles. 970 sli will only be able to use 3.5GB of v-ram which is still fine for today games, though you might be disappointed if you're looking for some futureproofness. Getting the 980 ti will also allow you to sli the 980ti in future.
How is that odd? If you SLI two high end cards, the 970s, they are most likely going to beat a flagship card.
Its like comparing SLI 770s to a 780Ti, one is an obvious *raw performance winner.

Now that being said, when you need more Vram the Ti starts to get more attractive, not to mention it draws less power and scales better.
If you take it a step further, you can get 970 SLI instead of a Ti, but then whats your upgrade path?
