SLi or single card for my build?

im researching for a new build, not on a strict budget but not independently wealthy, and want it to kick rear .. will two 970's sli'ed bench higher than the top single card? and can you direct me to a water cooling setup that will work with sli'ed cards if such an animal exists .. thanks for your time ... any other recommends throw them at me, list your ideal box in the ~2500$ range if you want i'd appreciate it ..

You're better off going with a powerful single card than two weak cards. SLI has been terrible the last few years and I expect this trend to continue. The only time you should consider SLI (in my opinion) is if a 980 Ti or a Titan X is not powerful enough for your target resolution, framerates, and graphic settings. I personally use two 980Ti's for 2560x1440 144Hz gaming. It makes sense at that point.
