I game at 4k and SOME games run 40-50 fps which isnt exactly terrible but you just cant beat 60 (on 4k that is) I have a gsync monitor and want to play at 60 FPS all the time.

I considered getting a 2nd 980 Ti however this would probably be overkill for 60 fps and very costly.

What is nvidia's / amd's next GPU ? i would assume that this would be able to achieve a solid 60fps if i sell my 980 ti when the time comes and add a couple hundred £ to get the upgrade.

Also how far are we off 144hz 4k gsync monitors?

I'm expecting the next generation Nvidia Pascal cards to be out sooner than you might think. Sources are saying some time in 2016, but the chatter has already begun, so I would think it might be early in the year.

On your current platform it simply isn't worth the money getting another 980ti there is simply too much performance loss due to the lkimited pcie lanes.

I'd suggest dropping the detail until you hit a comfrtable 60fps. Or as I am constantly forced to do, play the game, see what looks good and drop a setting to low to mitigate gpu load and see what works for you.

Are the 8x 8x a limiting factor for 980 Ti SLI?

I was of the opinion that gen 3 PCIE lanes at 8x 8x do not bottleneck albeit the pic below is a 980
