Sli vs single

i am looking at a xfx 6950 2gb and i was going to get 2 to run in crossfire how does that setup compete with a single gtx 580

In most cases two cards in either crossfire or sli will be better than one card. The question you want to ask your self is that if you got the 580 would you at some point get another one or is that possability out of the question. If that is the case then you would be better off with the two cards now.

Dual cards usually gives you more problem: more power consumption, heat, noise.
But dual card could nearly double your performance. Your choice.

i am building this computer for a friend and i am thinking about getting him the radeon hd 6990 his butget is 2000 with a monitor also i will be getting him a 850watt power supply to run the monster

For the moment GTX 580 or Ati 6970 are powerfull enough to play almost everything. In the future you can go to SLI or Crossfire.
