sli with 1 pcie slot

i only have one pci e16x slot do i need 2 to run sli or does only 1 have to be inserted into a pci express 16x slot

You need to have 2 pcie x16 (which will run into x8 mode), and motherboard that supports sli (unless you wanna getaway with modifying drivers, or let windows 10 use the second gpu as DX12 allows that), in general not worth it unless you play games at very high resolution (4k), and high/max details.
