So right now I have one 780ti acx card. I am looking to get another. However I know that by getting another acx card I will run into a major issue with heat. If I could downgrade my current card to a reference cooler, and pick up another reference cooler card should I do that? Also, how could I go about doing that?

Solution
the top card would be hotter, but not by much and not to the point where it chokes either. This blower thing your on about won't offer any temp decrease, it will actually offer worse airflow and worse heat dissipation. Hot air rises, so the top card is always going to get hotter as the hot air is going up, no other setup or configuration can have such a huge impact on temperatures. The ACX cooler has a much better cooler, with the fans pushing air up, where it is supposed to on the PCB, the cooler is much more effective and will keep the card cooler due to the cooler design, as it is designed for better heat dissipation then the stock cooler.
heat is an issue with SLI, but the GTX 780Ti isn't that hot of a GPU. I would not care about the GPU itself as that is of no help, especially the reference card, which will make heat worse but look into an airflow solution into your case to dissipate heat much more effectively.

With airflow;

Use front fan as intake

back as outtake

top as outtake

bottom as intake

side; forget about that as it disturbs airflow.

add a top 120mm fan and you'll be set, as there isn't a bottom fan mounting. Heat won't be so much of an issue then.

Right now i have all 120mm case fans. 1 top blowing out, one on the rear blowing out, one on the front as intake, and 2 side fans; cant tell if they are intake or outtake.

Overall I really cant tell you how good the airflow is in this case... my cpu is a 4770k, and it runs hot, hotter than normal because its a below average chip... (silicon lottery, I got unlucky). So temps tend to be high. Ive noticed a good amount of heat comes out of my 780ti acx, and the temps inside my case are usually around 40-43C while playing something like DayZ or Crysis 3.

Why do many people say the normal blower style cards are better for SLI than ACX cards? In fact, its actually preferred for sli setups...

no, defiantly not, the ACX cooled cards are much better as they cool the GPU much more effectively with their placement of heatpipes/heatsinks and fans, unlike the single fanned stock cooler with less heatpipes, dissipating less heat and therefore making the card run hotter. A stock cooler will never do better then any reputation custom cooler, especially EVGA.

If I were to get another ACX card, the top card would choke from the heat from the bottom card thus deeming it worse for sli. However with extreme airflow blowing air inbetween those 2 cards the problem could be solved... but I dont have room for that in my case, and don't want to do that anyways. That would look dumb.
