Slot 1 retension clip

I would like to upgrade from a PII 350 MHz to a PIII 600MHz CPU on a SE440BX-2 MOBO but my current CPU the 350 has a heat sink on it, the 600 has a fan. I have read that the fan on the 600 prevents the use of the slot 1 retension clip to hold the card down. Is there a diff. between the 2 clips and can it be upgraded to hold the PIII?

i dont think there is any diference between the two, i upgraded a similar setup to p3 600 slot 1 on a generic 440bx board and had no problems apart from a simple bios update.

at the most, you might need to change the cpu retention bracket for the p3, and a possible bios update to recognise the p3.

Where can I find a PIII retension bracket for a slot 1?

actually it isnt any different from p2 i guess, you might get it alongwith a new p3 slot 1 motherboard, or you can ask your vendor for a spare one.

btw have you tried doing the upgrade? i guess you wont have any problem.

No I have not tried the upgrade yet but I know someone that did and his new PIII is not clipped down because of this issue. Thanks again for your help.

I tryed to exchange different cpus - p2,katmai, convington, slocket ,on different types of cpu holders (there are lot more than 2 types), and i didn't run yet into any problem fitting the cpu . If you do you can unscrew it and insert cpu without it (i saw that configuration working).
