I have recently had problems with my Gateway 500 computer (Win XP home
edition, 2.66 ghz P4, 512mb RAM, DVD writer, DSL w/ Intel Pro
integrated ethernet adapter, and 2 hard drives, both Maxtor). I
initially thought the problem was spyware. My internet was sluggish
(DSL through a router), and I was losing packets when I checked the
ping. When I did a spyware check, I did have some spyware that was a
bit tenacious. Rather than spend hours trying to get rid of it, I
reformatted my hard drive. I thought my problems would be over, but my
computer still acted sluggishly, even the non-internet programs. For
example, when I tried to install my printer software, it took forever,
and I even got an error message (duh-I didn't write it down; it had
something to do with memory and possibly check sum???). Also, when I
start up my computer and log on to my desktop, it takes quite a long
time for it to even get to my desktop, and an equally long time to
load the icons. In addition, some programs freeze on me. I ran the PC
doctor diagnostics, and the hardware all seems to pass the
diagnostics, so I think it has something to do with the OS. I did have
my computer on for 1 week straight when I reformatted the hd; could
the processor have been overheated, and caused a faulty installation
of windows? I'm at a loss as to what this could be; negative virus
scan with NAV, and negative spyware scan with Pest Patrol. Any
suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I wonder if your CPU fan is not working. That would make a P4
chip run at half speed if it overheats. Just for thought.

I turned the computer off, let it sit overnight, and then did another
reformat, and this time it works fine. I also blew out the dust (I had
previously done this about 4 months ago, but there was still quite a
bit of dust in the case). I suspect that it was a cooling problem that
caused the chip to overheat.
