I'm using a Aorus Master X570 MB to transfer video files to an external M.2 NvME drive and Im getting 640 MB/sec transfer rate.

My setup for transfer is:

Video files on the 990 Pro M.2 drive in my PC, USB C out of MB to a Crucial P3 Plus M.2 external drive in USB enclosure. Thoughts on the slow speeds? All input appreciated.

Transfer will proceed at the lowest performing component in the chain.
Video files on the 980 will read quickly, but then needs to cross the usb interface at whatever speed that might be.
Then, later when the external ssd has filled it's buffers the speed will degrade to the ability to fill available nand blocks.
That process is fast on a new drive, but degrades as nand blocks are filled up.

Just a guess, but I suspect a nice 7200rpm HDD would be a good target drive.

That's what I was looking at. The slowest is the external drive at 3600MB/s write . The 990 is 7450 MB/s read

I would think at least 2000-3000 MB/s transfer speed....not 640.

Both drives are less than half full.

The 3600 speed write is a vendor benchmark for a new empty drive where all of the nand blocks are available.
It is a very artificial figure that degrades quickly under load.
Try the experiment using a ssd and a HDD.
You may find that the HDD performance is more consistent and the price per gb of storing video files will be a plus.

"slowest device in the chain" includes the connection.
Here, the USB. The port and cable.
Are we missing something here?

The USB 3.1 port is good for 5000 MB/s, the cable is good for 10,000 MB/s.

My transfer speed should be in the 2-3 GB range, not 640 MB.

Agreed, but for the most part any drive I've used that's less than maybe 80% has been at or very near advertised speeds.
MB vs Mb.
Bytes vs bits.
8:1 ratio.

The 3.1 interface is good for, theoretical max, 5000Mb/sec.
Which equates to ~600MB/sec.
That's what I've been telling you but you won't listen.....

Wow man.....not sure what I was thinking but it's been a bit (no pun) since I've used external drives for big files...totally spaced on that one.

Thanks man. 👍

Post a link to the enclosure.
