Don't know if this is the right section, but I'm here anyway...

As of 2 or 3 days ago, my downloads are insanely low. I'm downloading the morrowind Rebirth mod, which is a 316 mb file, and it's going to take 2 hours while I'm doing nothing else (7 hours if I start browsing the internet). This problem isn't only the servers for the download, because everything I try downloads slow. I got firefox (Which took chrome like 15 minutes to download...) to test the speeds and still get slow speeds. Anyone know why this could be? My network router is one floor below me, and I'm connected wirelessly. I don't think the router is the problem, because it's always worked fine before. The problem also exists in IE... but that's normal >😀

Indeed I have tried it. But now that I think about it, it could be the router. I forgot until now, but we replaced our router 2 days ago. Our old router was going bad (randomly dropped internet) so we replaced it with a spare we have. Could the new router be the problem?

you said it was a spare, is there a reason it was set aside in the first place? maybe because it was having issues? anyway, a good way to test is to just hook DIRECTLY into the Modem, just your computer, and see your download speeds. that should let you know if it's your router, also test on another computer/device, that should help narrow it down.

and as always, let us know! (for future googlers who have similar problems)

Maybe it is the router then. My dad didn't remember why he had it as a spare , so maybe that's why. I'll try a download on anothe computer to see if its only my computer. It also might be worth noting that when I go to planetelderscrolls.ign.com and press mods for morrowind, the page gives me a no data received error on all browsers. Only that website. Just thought that was strange so I let you know.

yup, that's what my modem/router was doing to me, at least until i reboot it, that's how i figured out it was the router, i couldn't access paypal on ANY browser, then i reboot the modem/router, and it worked again for a few hours (i play Hawken, so it was getting frustrating rebooting modem in the middle of a game session)

Nope, that didn't fix it. Still taking 8 minutes to download this 2.3 mb mod for morrowind. I tested to make sure it wasn't just the servers and I started a download from the Humble Bundle. This 72 mb game is estimating 1 hour to download. That's normally how long it takes me to download a 1 or 2 gb file...

Another note, it's not only browsers. I just opened steam and had a game update of 1.3 gb. It told me the estimated time was 1 hour at 1,024kb/s. I started the download, and I get speeds averaging 10kb/s. It says a 2 day download ^^

Rereading the messages have you tried this yet to verify it is the router issue by hooking just the modem up? I did not see a response to that. Also, just wondering are you on dsl/broadband/fiber/etc?

0. I'm terrible at all this network stuff.

1. What do you mean by hookinh just the modem up? Connecting my computer straight to the modem?

2. How do I find out? I think it's broadband.

3. I've confirmed it's not my computer. My sister's and mother's computers also have the same problem. When my parents return from vacation, I'll ask my Dad what he did with the old one. Maybe we can get that one back.

0. it's all good that is why there are forums

1. yes, take a computer and hook straight to the modem

3. dsl would special modem connected via phone line. broadband is connected through cable provider (comcast, time warner, cox, charter, etc). fiber...for residential would be fios

3. just because all having same issue does not mean it is or isn't the router....if source signal (modem) then that would affect all users as well as a bad router.

when hooking straight to modem you may have to power down then power backup

0. ... w00t :3

1. Well, I know that my Dad's computer is like that, but I can't access his computer since it has a password. He gets back Monday so I can ask him. I'd do it to my computer, but I have absolutely no idea how.

2. We has broadband. Comcast.

3. Well, I'll still check if we have the old router and try it out.

well i do not want you to get in trouble. It may be best to wait for dad because it does not seem mom is too involved and I would rather you not try to change things. If mom is concerned also and want to join in the help and you have a laptop then it is fairly easy depending on how accessible the router and modem are. Do you know if they are separate devices?

They are seperate. The modem is in our basement, the router is on the first floor, and I'm on the second floor. I use a desktop. My Mom is old school. Not a bad thing, she just doesn't know too much about technology ^^ And I'm more of a software person, so all of these is completely new to me. I'll probably just wait for them to get back. I might also text my Dad about it and see if he can help me set up the old router again to see if that's the problem.

probably best.

please post back results after fixed (whether or not something was replaced, reset, reconfigured or what) if you can. At least if you would post back it was fixed but you do not know how if it was.

This way, if you post a solution, then other members with the same issue may find their solution through yours.
