I just bought a brand new windows 10 asus laptop from the r540l series. it is running intel core 1.7 gHz, 4gb memory and hdd is 500 gb. i recently downloaded a windows application on my quite slow, 2009 mac laptop to see if it would work on my mac (it didnt) which took around 10 minutes. I am now downloading the same application on my new laptop, its been over an hour and barely any of it has downloaded. I dont think its supposed to be that slow, but im not a computer expert so im looking for answers to know if i should exchange it for a better one. (the application is 643 mb but barely took any time on my mac)

Well, it usually isn't the computer, but the download speed. If yours is not up to the task, then that could make it take longer.

Here is an idea of what it should take...

Connection type .... Download speed .... Download time
Modem .............. 28,8 kbit/s ....... 52:01:27
Modem .............. 56,6 kbit/s ....... 26:45:19
ADSL ............... 256 kbit/s ........ 05:51:09
ADSL ............... 512 kbit/s ........ 02:55:34
ADSL ............... 1 Mbit/s .......... 01:29:53
ADSL ............... 2 Mbit/s .......... 00:44:56
ADSL ............... 8 Mbit/s .......... 00:11:14
ADSL ............... 24 Mbit/s ......... 00:03:44
LAN ................ 10 Mbit/s ......... 00:08:59
LAN ................ 100 Mbit/s ........ 00:00:53
Turbo 3G...

So if it is really slow, I would check your connections speed. Sometimes it isn't giving us what we pay for. And, it can fluctuate drastically during the course of a day. And if you are doing this during peak times, then that can make it even worse.

Try it again when the timing would be better, and after checking your speed.
