Slow/inconsistent internet on a "fast" connection

Ryzen 1700
Asus motherboard B350
Network card= TP-LINK 300Mbps Wireless N adapter
AP= http://www.arubanetworks.com/products/networking/access-points/103h/

I'm on a school network and i'm having issues where the speeds look fast on a bench marking website but in real world use like loading a video or a skype call, etc I have long delays or poor quality. My question is there anything I can do on my PC to make it faster and what is causing the issue on the schools end?

Try changing your DNS setting https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

It's possible that the school's network has strict firewall policies, which may be impeding the network performance for some applications. Might have something to do with their QoS settings too.
