Slow internet speed but good torrent speed

Hey All,

A few days ago my internet speed dropped and it’s now painfully slow. First I suspected the ISP, but all other computers on the same network are showing good speed. Also, torrent download speed is OK, the same as used to be. Only download and browsing speed seems to be affected. One curious fact is that internet speed is ok for a couple of minutes after the computer boots, then turns slow.
I’ve already tried some things to no success:
- A complete AVAST scans including some boot scans. Some showed some minor threat that were deleted or fixed.
- Used CCleaner to clean up browser cache, windows trash files and the Windows registry
- Used MVRegClean to clean the windows registry
- Changed the internet cable
- Reboot the modem
- Restored the computer to a previous state, before the latest windows update. At first it seemed to fix the problem but on the next boot it came back
- Bypassed the internet router and connected directly to the modem

Anyone has some advice on what may be going on? I’m already thinking on the good, old “FORMAT C:” but wanted to do this as last resort. I’ll try another anti-virus but I do not hold any hope that it will work. I’m using Windows 7 ultimate edition.

Next thing I'll try is to disable System restore and do a Safe mode boot to look for malware.

is torrent speed actually fast, i.e. is the actual file downloaded in an expected time, or is it just reporting that it is fast.

my guess, something else is using you bandwidth through your torrent client.

task manager and network utilisation? what does it look like when you are doing nothing.

I don't think that my torrent client is eating my bandwidth because it still slow when the client is not enabled. And torrent speed is actually fast, the file is download in the expected time.
Network utilization shows no activity when I'm doing nothing.

Update on this:

- Avast full scan on windows safe mode didn't show any treath
- Safe mode with networking - Internet speed is back to normal

Based on this I'm guessing it could be any software that's slowing things down. I'll start removing some to see if it gets better. Is this a good option?

Another update:

I found that as soon as I started any internet activity (browsing, steam) with the exception of torrents, my CPU usage went to >20% and stayed at that. Using Windows Resource Monitor I found that Avast was the big user. So I uninstalled it and the problem went away. I guess it was some sort of bug with its last update. Problem solved =).

Hi, i had the same problem... now after two weeks i finaly found a way to solve it.

so .
1.
i reduced the MTU size to 1400 (you can check for your maximum mtu size with tcp optimizer)

this helped a bit but connetion was still to slow

2.
i disabled ipv6 for my network adapter

and that did the trick!

you can do this within your browser or in the system network settings!

some old hardware does not support the todays default MTU size of 1500 & ipv6
