hi all

i hope you are all well

for the last year i have noticed my PC is very slow to start up. it can take up to 10 minutes to fully load up, present the desktop and is ready to be used. Once its fully loaded up its as fine as it can be. i built it in 2017. internet pages load up fine, youtube streams fine. it does take a few extra seconds to load up pages, but its ok i can cope with that.

the PC doesn't have much in the way of usage. i don't play games on it. i just browse, emails but i've got a lot of data on it in terms of files.

why the slow start up?

hi

hardrive: i've used 149gb of 300gb
malware: i use windows defender/security and it says no threats detected

cpu: not sure how to measure the temp

thanks

This sounds indicative of a hard drive slowing down. One simple way to figure this out is to run Task manager as soon as you enter Windows to monitor the resources.

Right click on the Task Bar and left click "Task Manager". In Task Manager select "More Details" and observe what is taking up the most resources as Windows sets up. It should tell you if the CPU or Disk is maxed at 100%.

so how come the PC runs ok after the system loads up?

Recent versions of Windows do a lot of stuff in the background every time you boot the PC. Traditional hard drives can't handle it anymore, but solid state drives can. I have a decrepit laptop with a 5400rpm hard drive in it. It takes 20-25 minutes to load before it runs normally. An SSD changes all of that. Good news is SSDs are cheap. You can get one for about $30 to $45.

Make the startup groups skinny see if it has any affect.

wonder when last time it ran a defrag is. - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...ws-10-pc-048aefac-7f1f-4632-d48a-9700c4ec702a - mums win 10 PC needed one today, it was 12% fragmented. That will slow down everything.

Try a clean boot and see if it changes anything - make sure to read instructions and make sure NOT to disable any microsoft services or windows won't load right - https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

It doesn’t delete anything, it just stops non Microsoft programs running with start. Easy to reverse.

if clean boot fixes it, it shows its likely a startup program. You should, over a number of startups. restart the programs you stopped to isolate the one that is to blame.
