My Asus gaming laptop randomly went slow. Currently running windows 11. I do download a lot and tried ccleaner and malwarebites to try fix the issue if it’s do with a virus or missing registry entries.

It was fine yesterday and today it’s like something trying to process in the background which I think it making it run very slow. Iv tried task manager too but it’s just stating the windows defender is running the highest cpu so I can’t end the task but it’s always running anyway in the background so I don’t know think that’s problem, there’s also nothing else that stands out on task manager.

iv also tried to restore my system to a previous good points, but both times have failed because an username iCloud error desktop ini what ever that means.

Is my next resort just to do a full wipe or anyone got any third party app that I could try which might find the issue if it’s to do with a very well hidden virus/malware or system error in general?

also if I do a wipe, anyone got any decent free apps that are worth getting for malware/virus software and something that’ll know when my drivers need updating ?

Cheers

what model Asus Laptop?

ccleaner doesn't often help
you don't need to be on latest drivers all the time. Most of the 3rd party driver updaters get it wrong and can make things worse.

What are specs? what drives does it have?

its possible its trying to restore a corrupted Icloud database

Hello my laptop is ASUS Tuf A15 FA506IU

just got home and opened my laptop up, it’s like almost something is interfering my processing I think. Every time i search something with the windows icon or click start to launch an app the desktop apps getting flickering like something loads, like a constant background refresh.

I’ll give the iCloud thing ago, have you got any other recommendations to check to see what might be happening? Or know of any better free virus/malware removers just to see if anything is actually hiding away from windows defender or malwarebites?

Thank you for your help

see if its still slow in safe mode:

  1. go to settings/System/recovery
  2. next to advanced startup, click restart now button
  3. this restarts PC in a blue menu
  4. choose troubleshoot
  5. choose advanced
  6. choose startup options
  7. click the restart button
  8. choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
  9. Pc will restart and load safe mode

Try Hitman Pro - https://www.hitmanpro.com/en-us
or Bitdefender Free - https://www.bitdefender.com.au/solutions/free.html

try running Crystaldiskinfo on the drive(s) = https://crystalmark.info/en/ (blue icon)

Yes still slow unfortunately, I was going to do a full reset to factory, but selected the download from cloud which got stuck on 100% download so tried use windows fresh install from hard drive which is stuck at 53% for hours now, any advice on how I could just do a full reset, neither option seems to be working directly through windows settings

on another PC, download either the media creation tool (link 2) or ISO (link3) and use it to make a win 11 installer on USB - https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

follow this guide: https://forums.tomshardware.com/faq/how-to-do-a-clean-installation-of-windows-10.3170366/ (its mostly the same as 10)

I don't like resets, I seen to many of them break. I seen them remove windows and just leave a blank drive before. Better to just clean install and start a fresh
Thanks buddy, I’ll report back if any issues are still there afterwards

Very strange, I just got home from work and left my laptop on to do a reset from the windows cloud this time and it seems smooth compared to the previous time I set up from my windows version already on the drive. It’s a head scratcher…

the version on drive could be corrupted. Its another reason I use the USB. Downloading it is same thing I guess. I don't know if it downloads a new ISO or just repairs the one on PC now.

I am going to have to look into cloud resets. I am sure they have details somewhere... just not tonight.
