Slow transfers to NAS...

Hi all,

I was wanting to know if I could tweak win7 to achieve better file transfers to my NAS?

I'm sure my hdd is the bottleneck but 30MB/s isn't much of an improvement over 12MB/s. I have and old lga775 P4 running FreeNAS v0.7 with a single 2TB hdd. My desktop is a sandy bridge i7 with a 320GB Samsung HDD. I know mechanical drives are slow but I thought I would be able to achieve higher transfers after adding a gigabit ethernet card to my server.

It's actually the drive that's the problem.
A 2 TB drive is unbelievably slow. The larger the drive, the slower it runs.
CLUE: use a small fast drive for the operating system and programs
DO NOT store files on that dedicated drive.
Store your personal files, music, video, documents, pictures on a separate larger drive.
Then, do not mix files with the OS and programs, keep them on separate drives.
The system will run much faster.

I do have an old 40GB IDE HDD that host's the install for FreeNAS and the rest of the space on the drive is shared but never used. The 2TB drive is formatted NTFS if that may slow it down? My reasoning is that since the 2TB drive is just for storage I should be getting close to the maximum write speed of the drive. I was only expecting to get 50MB/s after installing the new network card. I even went and installed new firmware on my trendnet router since the wireless is set at 300Mb/s instead of 450Mb/s and if you do the conversion from bytes to bits it comes out to just over 30MB/s. I only have the one Samsung drive in my desktop that hosts the win7 install so I was hoping that me desktop drive was the bottleneck... If it still seems like the 2TB drive is still the bottleneck then I guess I will have to live with it LOL. I will remove the drive and defrag it in my desktop and see if that helps when I get home.. Reformatting the drive got me a boost of 5MB/s but I will have to live with the slow transfers. Thanks
