The problem is windows is slow sometimes after booting. The first 5-10seconds after my pc boots, it's fast, can open folders/programmes/file explorer fast.

After that I run into problems; slow opening of files/creating new files, right click menu not working or slow on desktop and chrome, dragging cursor around on desktop and it lags like it's at 1fps.

Tried uninstalling avast, disabling startup programmes, updating all drivers, hdd is defragged (although windows is on ssd), don't have a virus.

Will perform a clean installation of windows as a last resort, asking on here before incase anyone knows any fixes or ideas.

Cheers

Solution
Try performing a clean state boot - (if on Windows 10):
  • Go to start
  • Type in msconfig then press enter
  • Go to services tab
  • Toggle "hide all microsoft services"
  • Then click Disable All.

Then reboot and see if the slowdown persists.
If the slow down goes away, you have a third party service that is causing an issue.

If the slow down still occurs:
It may be worth trying booting into safe mode to see if the issue persists; https://www.tomshardware.co.uk/start-windows_10-safe-mode,review-34911.html

Then we may be looking at hardware - faulty RAM can very commonly cause this kind of issue, but eradicate software first :)

So the clean state boot worked, thanks !
What would the next step be ? Going through the services tab and disabling each non microsoft service 1by1 and restarting until I find the problem service ?

That's one method of doing it.

First I would make sure that all of your drivers are completely up to date first. Including your Motherboard/Chipset, and GPU drivers.
I sometimes use something like SUMO to check for out of date drivers, but then update them manually myself by going to the manufacturers website, as driver installer programs have a tendency to cause more problems and install the wrong drivers.

In your case it could be an out of date driver causing conflict, so first port is to update them all.

All sorted.
Turns out it was "AsusFanControlService" slowing down part of my pc, most likely it was conflicting with speedfan or something ?
Couldn't uninstall the individual programme so uninstalled the complete AI suite.

cheers for you help !
