sluggish celeron

I'm running a celeron 900 with 256megs of ram under winXP pro. Windows is unusually sluggish even after startup.. I checked the bios and found that the "cpu host/pci clock" setting was on default. I have the following options that I can choose rather than the default: 100/33 103/34 112/37 105/35 110/36 115/38.

Any ideas?

No. thats normal.
100/33 is the default speed for cellerons of 800Mhz or greater.

You can try higher settings. But this is called overclocking, and may result in instability/problems.

if you say "unusually sluggish", i would say you need so make sure your hardware settings are correct (dma mode and stuff). also you might want to check your system and make sure you don't have a virus. is this a new fresh install or a update/upgrade?

I agree with scamtron.. though a 900 MHz Celeron is no racer, it should handle XP allright as long as you dont run too demanding apps; my guess is DMA isnt enabled on your harddisk. HAve a look in the device manager. Having it set to PIO turns *every* PC into a turtle.

256MB is a bit low for XP, Youll probably need 512MB of RAM for optimum performance. That could be your problem.

256mb of ram is more than sufficient dood.... if the mentioned above are not helpful, i suggest trying different drivers.

256 MB is the least I would recommend.

128 megs does a fine job (we are talking about sluggishness) and 256 is what is being used so there shouldn't be any problems with not having enough ram dood

Exactly, that's why I don't use 128MB. If 128MB is recommended I use 256MB. That way I have plenty of overhead for gaming and so forth. If I was doing word processing I would go with 128.
