I'm building a rig that doesn't support Optical drives due to the case (Define S).
I have 2 options:
1. I have a functional optical drive, so I would run the PC Opened up, and connect the optical drive to the PC. Using it just for motherboard disk thingy download, and the win 10 download and GPU driver download Which would also cut down a few euros.
2. USB windows (more expensive), download drivers from the internet.
Is the motherboard disk thingy downloadable on the internet? I have the ASUS z170 pro gaming.

Solution
Well if you already have the disks you need and a drive, there's no reason not to go that way. Use something (not metal, just in case) as a stand to hold the disk drive.
Is this a new PC, or is there already an OS installed? As to using the ODD, do you already have a Windows disk or a blank DVD? If by "motherboard disk thingy" you mean the driver install disk, then as long as the network works out of the box you can download the latest drivers from asus.com. Otherwise the minimum you'd need to copy over from another PC is the network driver.

I have everything except the OS. Sorry for calling it the motherboard disk thingy, I meant the driver install disk.
