Hello, I am new to the forum and I am attempting to study for my Comptia Exam. For the most part I am getting most of my information with no help. However, that being said I am attempting to learn how to replace an Internal Smart Card Reader into a laptop. If anyone can explain the steps involved in replacing the hardware it would be highly appreciated.

That reader is likely soldered directly to the motherboard.
You'd need to find the exact same one.
Hows your experience with a soldering iron?

Is the current one broken, or is this just informational for 'how to do it'?

Information on how to do it. As aforementioned I am new at all of this and this is just section 1 of A+. I am not able to afford to go to school for all of this so I am attempting to learn outside of spending money.

Basically, remove and replace.

Open up the laptop.
Locate the offending part.
Obtain a 1:1 replacement.
Desolder the broken one.
Solder the new one in place.
Test.

Surface mount components take a bit of practice to do it right.

Maybe obtain a semi working laptop or two, and practice.
If you come over to my house, I'd give you a couple for free.
