Question Smart switch for external drive

Just thinking what would be any real issue with backing-up to an external enclosure that is connected to something like a smart outlet? I have two WD Red Plus 4TB drives, one is in a simple home server for files and the second is for back-up (bought to do RAID 1 but soon realized that although it sounded cool, it was not needed as my operation does not need time critical redundancy). If I were to use a program like Veeam or similar and did an automatic weekly or twice-weekly back-up, couldn't I set the AC powered enclosure to power on a couple minutes before the automated back-up and then turn off at some safe time like a few hours later. (total time would be dependent upon testing back-up time and adding buffer). Or, is there a better way to automate having an external drive power down when not in use?

Use internal drive instead and don't worry about turning it off.
