Hey,

I was wondering if any of you had experience with the SmartRG 505n in terms of setting up QoS.

I recently started using one of these, instead of my d-link 855. On the d link i was able to set priority based on mac address (value between 1 and 255) to give certain network computers more priority over internet access. The smartrg seems to have a more intricate way of managing Qos, and im not really sure what I am doing..

Has anyone set up QoS on one of these?

Hard to say they think it is a great "feature" to not have a user manual which makes it impossible for someone to help you.

Almost all QoS is a complete waste of time. The vast majority of routers you can only control outbound traffic and in almost all cases it is inbound...ie download.. traffic that is causing issues. Tons of routers let you set the DSCP values to all kinds of interesting numbers but the second the packet get to the ISP it is removed. Setting things to high, medium and low mean nothing at all. Does that mean 2 packets for every 1 are sent or 10 to 1 or what.

The only routers that you can do anything useful with have the ability to put hard mbit/sec rates on traffic. With careful messing around you can in some cases limit download traffic by limiting upload traffic but it tends to not work real well There are advanced routers that can limit the download speeds to fixed numbers also. These work somewhat better but the still will not completely solve the issue. The ISP is in full control of the traffic being sent to your house and if they decide to drop certain data because you have exceeded your download capacity there is nothing you can do to ever get that data back.
