So yesterday I was using my computer, when it suddenly shut itself off completely. Then it turned back on for about 1 second and then turned off. Next thing I knew there was a bright light coming from my pc like a flame/spark. Then my pc would not turn on. I was left with a burnt smell after. I checked it out and presumed my PSU had been fried so the next day I went out to buy a new 800W PSU. I attached it and tried to turn my pc on, the light from my fan lit up for not even a second before turning off. After that happened my PC would turn back on and I am once avgain left with a burnt smell. Any ideas on whats wrong?

Note: Prior to the event of my computer sparking up, there were one or two other occasions which were similar but on a much smaller scale where there would be a quick and small spark (yes i know im stupid for not getting it checked out asap).

Try smelling the old PSU. If it smells burnt you blew some components (resistors, caps, etc...) Resistors will give the burnt smell.

It's possible that the blown power supply damaged your motherboard so that even changing the defective power supply won't work. I've seen cheaper power supplies fail and take some components with it. That's when people realize it's worth getting more expensive power supplies.
