I am trying to understand the power consumption of the SMPS installed in my Desktop computer.

Could you please help me identify the power consumed per hour?

The photograph of the SMPS label is as follows:

Thanks in advance.

From the socket ??

150w absolute max mate + maybe what 25-35w for speakers & monitor separately.

That component list (assuming integrated graphics) won't top out at more than 120w with everything running 100% maxed out stress testing, I've allowed 30w for 75% efficiency which I'd assume would be a close estimate.

Under general use , maybe 80w draw so 100-110w realistically.
The label is not showing anything but maximum power it's capable of delivering. It draws only as much as it's required at a time and that's determined by computer usage and seldom may hit those maximums.
So, according to that label the maximum it would draw from power socket is by formula Watt = Amper times Volts. Just basic physics from elementary or high school.

Thanks CountMike! What's worrying me the 600W written on the label.

Yes, now I do get the basic point that the consumption is based on the computer usage.

My bad, I am a business post graduate and miles away form physics! :)

It depends on what you're actually running from it.

With it being a very low end frontech I doubt its more than 70% efficient.

Meaning if you draw 100w of power from it it will pull 130w from the wall

The 600w on the label is a fantasy rating (at least for PC use)

It essentially has the capabilities of say a decent 350w unit in real world use.

That 225w rating on the 3.3/5v rails is completely unuseable in a modern pc.
The most you'll draw generally is 30w or so if you have an awful lot of USB peripherals & 5v led lighting installed.

95% + of the power a modern PC uses is from the 12v line.

Hello madmatt30! Thanks for the detailed reply.

I was under the wrong impression that my SMPS was drawing 600W per hour.

But now I understand it would be drawing around 350W maximum per hour. (Hope I got it right)

I don't have any power drawing USB peripherals except for a mouse. However, I have got 2 Nos. 2TB HDDs + 1 500 GB HDD installed for data backup.

no

you are using a lot less than that, and is based on your components

your computer only uses the power it needs

^ whs .

In fact I doubt you could drag it to its max anyway , its a low end unit.

What are the components you're using in their entirety ??

We could give you a fairly close estimate to what you are actually using in real world terms with that info.

Its sometimes surprising what you're really using (in a good way I mean)

Many of us have used a power meter at some time (an inline socket that goes between the PSU & the wall) which shows absolute draw from the socket itself.

Thank you madmatt30 for taking the time to reply.

Here is a list of components attached:

1 DVD Writer
2 Hard Drives - 2 TB each (SATA)
1 Hard Drive - 500 GB (SATA)
USB powered mouse
USB powered Wifi dongle
Standard Keyboard
Samsung 21 inch Monitor
Speakers - most of the time they are turned off

Computer configuration:
Processor: Intel Pentium CPU G620 @2.60GHz
Ram: 8 GB

Thanks a ton! Yes, you are right, it has integrated graphics.

This is a relief. 100-110w is a saver. Honestly, I was wondering my Desktop consumes a huge amount of power.

Sorry, what is a socket? My bad, I'm pretty bad with terms :( My desktop is connected to an UPS (a very simple one).
