I just did that too - and found your post when searching to find out
if anyone else had killed them as well. I didn't like the choices
either.

I killed them through speed - I've already finished the main MW quest
so have a special hammer from that which kills stuff quite rapidly. I
put on my Flying Ring (constant levitation) on exiting the Hall, then
jumped the barrier to the wolves. Actually it didn't make much
difference with the Flying Ring, as Rigmor managed to open the gate by
himself. But I had a head start, and managed to kill all three wolves
before they got him.

The Chief is pretty pissed off and says that he really should strike
me down (or something) but luckily for me he isn't as worshipful of
the sacred wolves as other Skaal are. He says that Rigmor will just
have to be exiled instead - so all in all the exercise didn't achieve
much.

But at least I tried 😉

Rather brilliant! :)

I have this thing about me that just won't let me condemn Rigmor to exile
instead of a nice, wholesome death. If I exiled him, would he turn up in
some remote part of the island later, or is he gone for good? It would be
such a waste not to use him for a few follow-up quests to help him clear his
shabby name, or some such.

If you exile him, he will stay forever in the great hall, where you left
him. He
will refuse to talk, except to say, that he won't talk, but he will not
disappear.
or leave. He will be the proverbially 'invisible' man. And it is probably
only
your character that can see him. Apparently exile for them means exile
from
the company of men, exile from society. So if you want to get rid of him,
the
only way is to chose the wolves.

To stay in the spirit of the story, chasing him from the village, alone
and
with no support from the clan, would mean another death sentence,

Oh, I don't know - I did it at his level.

I guess if he has to 'not exist', that's ok, but I rather he buggered off to
some little secret cave and started selling Stalhrim or some such. Or just
left, and I stumble on his corpse in a cave, out in the woods, or on
Morrowind a few months later. Not complaining. Just thinking on how I'd
have done it. I would also enjoy myself if he either went werewolf, or he
got a band of cutthroats together and attacked the village a few months
later.

I'm glad I don't make that choice then. He must be an unpleasant reminder
when you've done the quests. A party-pooper in the party in your honour.
I'd end up having to Command him to get out of My hall. Either set him up
with that widow in the cave, or take him out and do the honourable thing,
while playing the theme from Old Yeller in my head. I dunno if I have the
patience to keep summoning wolves on him until he died. Easier just to set
him up with the widow. Happy ending all round. :)
