So i asked about a mobo for a PIV 3.2 775 chip yesterday...and got several different answers, from, stay 478, go AMD, etc.... I have been doing research for the last month or so and I am still totally lost. I want to replace my 1.5PIV system from a few years ago...i want a really good computer, but not the best....alot of encoding work, alot of calulation intensive stuff, only games sometimes, working with about 900 bucks for everything but monitor. From all my research, the PIV 540 and the 915P chipset seemed to be the way to go, but apparently people dont think so. Can i get some recommendations about chips/board to go with (no 64bit for those about to recommend them, please), including board and RAM manuf. in terms of quality/reliability....i doubt id be oc'ing the CPU btw if that makes a difference. Thanks...

RSurfer - I know how you feel man... so mancy choices ... so many opinions ... to make the wrong choice etc.

But, given you are in the $1K budget range ... you might look at a system that I'm configuring and wanting some feedback on over on this thread .. fits you pretty close .. take a look.

look down closer to the bottom and there's a long post there with a basic config.

You need to read more. Tom's has had many articles for the last year showing the Prescott core P4's to be slower and much hotter than Northwood cores. Socket 478 is available with either, but 775 is Prescott only.

AMD makes better performing chips with fewer heat problems than even the Northwood, but if you're really stuck on getting Intel, you should consider Northwood.

You can get a 478 board with the 915P chipset if you like. But if I were buying, I'd buy an A64.

Imagine making that statement a few of years ago. People would think you were nuts.

Intel screwed up with the Pathos4, er, P4. They tried to fix it, but they never perfected it. PIII was great, Northwood looked good at introduction simply because AMD was having problems with the T-bred, but AMD fixed those issues.
