So here's my problem...

I have a GF2 Pro that has served me well for the past two years +, and it's about time to get a new one. Money is certainly an object, but I still got about $200 to spend on a new card. I think I want an ATI 9700 which I can get for a little more, but I also have the opportunity to get a FX 5900 128mb version for the same price. I am sure both of these cards are good, but I tend to use a lot of different OS's like Solaris 8, Linuxes, BSDs, Netware etc. Linux is my most frequently used OS (Red Hat 9 and Debian 3). Neither ATI nor nVidia provide good Linux drivers, but nVidia has a better track record of the two. I have heard many Linux users complain about ATI in particular, so have anyone had any experience with these cards in Linux?
I am leaning towards the ATI for quality in Windows games, but nVidia has (traditionally) been better for Linux users so it might be a better option in my case.

Thanks for your help guys,

Dev

Dev, you are in luck...check out the Linux forum here for my post on beta testers. ATI put the word out a few weeks ago that they are looking for testers for their Catalyst drivers. This is VERY important and cool because it shows that ATI is really wanting to support that end of the market. If you get into that kind of thing, it would be cool to be on the beta tester squad. I signed up right away as well having RH9 and RH7.2 running on two boxes I've built. I've got my 9500 Pro and 9800 Pro I'll be using on both of these OS's and hopefully get to test some drivers from ATI. It'd sure be cool if they gave some compensation for helping  . Anyways...just thought you might check that out 😛

For gaming in windows I'd recommend Ati, but for linux... and the FX 5900 is a decent card, too.

I think I'd recommend the 5900 in this case. Ati is getting better but do you have the time to be a beta tester?

Hmm, seems like ATI is finally paying attention to their drivers. With the success of the catalyst drivers and their recent cards, this might be the way to go.
The link in your post doesn't seem to be there anymore, but could you give a heads up on ho the betas are going? I do not need optimizations to be perfect, but I need a system that doesn't crash.
Thanks for the heads up though, maybe I should hold off for a little while until more info on the drivers are available.
