Im using an fx 6300 clocked at stock 3.5 ghz with the stocker cooler. I just got my pc up and running then entered the msi bios for the first time. I saw that my temp for the cpu started off at 50 then went to 60 after a few minutes while the mainboard was at about 23. Im no expert, but those numbers sound too high. I remember accidentally placing the cpu cooler on the table with the paste touching the wood but it looked like barely any was taken off. I have literally done nothing on this pc yet, didnt even boot windows, just entered the bios then shut the thing off. Any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks

somethings wrong with your cooler. If its a closed loop water cooler check that the pump is running. this can be rather hard to do but if you feel the intake hose feels cool and the out is warm (from the CPU) and you can hear of feel a humm on the pump it would be working. If that all checks out or you have a air cooler you need to take it off and clean both your CPU and CPU cooler off and reapply Thermal Compound

Stock cooler.

i hade a A8 6800k (4.4Gh) on a AMD stock cooler and it never went over 40 at idle. also AMD is packing CPU with closed loop water cooler (tho not that one). i did miss the stock cooler note on OP's post tho.

I think you should get some good TIM and remove the old thermal past and re-apply. Make sure you remove all of the old past first and then make sure the heatsink if sitting firmly mounted. Those temp's are to high for idle even with the stock cooler. They actually work good but can get loud when the temp ramps up but other than that the stock cooler works good so that should not be a issue if installed correctly.

also a best buy should have Thermal Compound and for the most part the rang from high end TIM and something you can find there would be like 5 degrees Celsius, tho i would say to get something good for 10$ or so you can get it running now.
