So i just got my new cpu and problems arise...

Just installed everything and everything was running nice, but when i play games or running benchmark the computer freeze every now and then. I tried disabling dual channel (my ram isnt too good) but its still the same.

A64 3200 skt-939
Gigabyte K8NS ultra-939
BFG geforce 6800gt
2x512mb infineon pc-3200 ram.

Drivers - I'm assuming you're using the latest video drivers from nVidia.com and not the ones that came with the vid card, correct? Can get latest at <A HREF="http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_66.93" target="_new">GeForce 66.93 Drivers</A>

Power - Something important to list that wasn't listed is the power supply. GeForce 6800GT is a power hungry mofo so maybe inadequate power is the culprit.

Temps - Overclocking at all? That could also be part of the blame... perhaps the system is locking up as a safeguard against overheating the vid card. What temps is the vid card running at under load and at idle?

Driver : I tried all version from the 66 to the 75
Power : The card was working on my cheap 300w, i now have a 310w.
Overclocking : none

dude,
1)nvidia first of all recommends at least 350w of power for the GT
2) 310 won't do much compared to the 300
3)310w doesn't mean anything, it is the HIGHEST output, not considering fluncuations and most importantly EFFICENCY if i have a 800w psu and a efficency of like 10 percent, it would in theory only get about 80w of power to my parts, and obviously thats not enough

i think the main suspect here is the psu... definatly

I think the main suspect should be memory. Try upping the v to 2.7, maybe raising the timings as far as you can as well.
I dont know about rour psu, but it does sound weak.

I raised vram by 0.1v , the freeze took more time to manifest in 3dmark, first test run without any issue, doom 3 run perfectly. The 2nd test of 3dmark show these freeze and all the other tests too. World of warcraft have them too. Didnt test other games.

Im gonna go try raising the ram by 0.2V. I cant seem to find a timing option in the bios.

im planning on buying a new psu tomorrow. Appart of that the cpu look really nice with a 35C after 2 hour of prime.

I agree 110%.

Would make sense that it freezes during video benchmarking and gaming. When you're doing either, the vid card is going to require more power to output the data faster to satisfy software requirements. Soon as it hits a power inefficiency, something bad is going to happen... i.e. system lockup.

I just got a antec 480w psu. Its still doing it and i just wasted 100 bucks.

Wow. Are you serious? I'm running a P4 2.6C with 2x512MB PC3200 in DC, a GF 6600GT, and a RAID1 array and I only have a 380W supply that I haven't even reached the limits of yet. Am I supposed to believe that just the minor step up in graphics and in CPU are meant to require an additional 120W? If he had a power-hungry high-end Scotty and a dual GF 6800GT SLI setup then I could believe that he'd need 600W...

The ABIT IS7 800 MHz FSB motherboard starting off at an Intel 2.0 GHz 32 bit CPU recommends a 500 Watt power supply in the MoB Manual.

An ASUS A7N8X, 400 MHz FSB Motherboard running an XP 2800+ to a 3200+ @ 2.2 GHz 32 bit CPU recomends a 450 Watt power supply.

All that even before the consideration of any graphics cards.

Just the way the chips fall with home computer builds. They are as finicky as cats these high end systems.

Retail computers are a mix of lame parts with lax settings on CPU and memory timings so everything gets along in harmony, the same cannot be said of home built computers they are a little more wild to get a good thread on especially if its a hyper thread.

Try setting the memory to SPD? Not "optimized".. etc

SPD = read timings from the RAM = Serial Presence Detect (I think)

The 66.93 are four month old drivers. Try the 71.84 or the just released 76.10. Most folks like the 71.84.

With the cats, you can do it under smartguart.in settings advanced. You can do it in bios with most boards.
