So I think I need a new CPU

I recently upgraded to a GTX 760 ti and I've been having some stuttering in games and what-not.

I have a AMD phenom 955 x4 at stock 3.2 ghz. I was thinking maybe this would be bottle-necking? I bought an after-market CPU cooler not too long ago and the CPU is only at 35-40c when running games on high.

When it "bottle-necks" doesn't it mean that the CPU has to work a lot harder to keep up with the GPU? So It would be hot if it were bottle-necking....?

I've been trying to play BF4 and it keeps stuttering, the game is actually decently smooth on any setting but it stutters more or less the same amount, even on low settings. I was thinking this is bottle-necking?

So i was comtemplating getting a new CPU but I have a M4N68T-M (lol) so I would need to get a new mobo also for a new CPU.

EDIT: The reason I got an after-market CPU cooler was because it was running at 100 degrees Celsius on high settings before.

So basically my question is: Would my GTX 760 be bottle-necking my AMD 955? If it is, what CPU and mobo should I upgrade to that would fit nicely with my GTX 760?

Hi Octavarium20,

Considering how intense modern gaming titles are getting, I would recommend that you invest in a new cpu and a mobo that will last you the next 2-3 years, so that you have a smooth and enjoyable gaming experience.

1- You could try the AMD FX Bulldozer series. The 8120, 8150 or 8350 to complement your GTX 760 Ti.
Here are the list of AMD FX CPU's. Additionally, since you have a cpu cooler, you can overclock these CPUs.

2- Here are a list of compatible motherboards for the AMD FX series.

3- Your current mobo, M4N68T-M (is an AM3 socket), supports the Bulldozer FX series.
However, it will be best if you select a mobo which is AM3+ and not AM3
Here are two sources that will give you more clarity:

a) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_AM3
b) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AM3%2B

If you do have any more queries, feel free to shoot!
Cheers! :)

I agree on the new cpu side. Do not get a faildozer though. They are not very good CPU's. FX 6300 and FX 8320 are what you want to look at from AMD. Pair either with a Gigabyte GA-970a-UD3p. On the Intel side, an i5 4570 with an Asrock B85 pro4 is a nice combo as well.
