[SOLVED] So i'm thinking of upgrading

Good evening guys im in a bit of a dilemma. I currently have an I5-7500 & GTX 1070 with 16GB RAM on a b250f motherboard.

Now my dilemma is should i upgrade to a 2080 Super or go for a new gen I7 CPU and motherboard. I can't afford both so any suggestions are welcome.

I'm currently using a 1440P Predator GSYNC monitor.

what is the refresh rate of the monitor? there is no benefit if you are already getting all the frames that the screen can output. if your not and have setting to crank up? get the 2080
cpu gets less helpful as you go up on gpu settings

Thank you for your reply. It's a 144hz Acer Predator monitor. If you were in my situation what would you go for? I mean should i wait for the next series of GPUs from Nvidia before splashing out £600+?

Your CPU bottleneck your GPU already. If you buy a 2080 that bottleneck will be pretty big.

If you buy a 2080 you have to make sure you have the PSU to run that card.

A GTX 1070 recommended PSU is a good quality 450-500Watts while the 2080 is 600Watts.

Hi and thanks for your reply. I have a corsair 750w gold+ PSU. I dont really get stutter in games tbh which makes me think my CPU is not much of a bottleneck just yet?

Your PSU is good then

Just look at this video. It's a video on your CPU against the i7 4770 with a GTX 1060. Just look at the difference. Imagine with a GTX 1070 now then imagine with a 2080. If you see a difference of ~ 20 fps on that video with a gtx 1060, with a 1070/2080 it's even greater.

Surely that video is misinformed the I5 beats the I7 by 20fps on average?

That's only one game. Though it is odd that the i5 is outperforming by that much. The 7500 is a few generations newer though, and probably slightly faster clocks.

That being said, the 1070 is still a fairly competent gpu, even at 1440. What is your reasoning for wanting an upgrade? Just to upgrade, or are you lacking somewhere? What games are you playing?

I'm surprised you aren't having stuttering issues or frame drops.

I'd recommend the cpu side, though wouldn't recommend intel. It's a dead end platform. Though it still performs great now, especially in max fps. Most ryzens are almost matching in max fps and doing better on the lows. Making for a more playable, smoother flowing game.

I'd recommend a 3600 or a 3700x. Very close in performance currently, and one more generation of chips to make for a better upgrade path.

Apologies for the late reply. I honestly have no real bottlenecks and have no stuttering at all.

This is my system:-
I5-7500
Evga GTX 1070
500GB Samsung Evo SSD
16GB RAM
Asus Strix b250f motherboard
Corsair 750w Gold+ PSU

What would you change in this system, obviously a cpu upgrade to new gen would require a new M/Board
