Hello everyone!

I am new to the PC shenanigans, and I was very kindly given a PC from a friend of mine, as he has upgraded. Current Specs:

M5A97 R2.0 Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.2ghz CPU (taken from an AM3 board)

GTX 760 Asus Direct CU II OC edition GPU

EVGA Supernova 750B semi modular PSU

Samsung 860 500GB SSD

Corsair H60 (2018) 120mm Single Radiator AIO cooler

Currently, I can edit videos (at a max 1080p 30fps) and play graphically optimized games like Overwatch, LOL... Stuff like that. Bottom line is, I want to upgrade so that I dont see 50% frame rate loss (60 down to 30) under heavy load in game. Ive been humming and hawwing over just upgrading the CPU to an AMD FX series, but I hear thats not the best idea on this board and I should just bite the bullet and look into Intel or AMD up to date components. At this point, I am just so baffled over how many options are available for builds, and It would take so much research to figure out what is best for what I would be using it for. I know I would need a new mobo (ATX preferred), CPU, GPU and RAM. I am sure that I can re-use my PSU if necessary, and my storage devices and cooler I can re-use. So at this point, can someone give me some direction towards a decent build that wont cost an arm and a leg? I know ill be into it over a thousand dollars, and thats fine. But what products are going to give me the best value?

Solution
I would not recommend spending any money on an upgrade of the existing motherboard. You will still be disappointed compared to your friends newer hardware. Save your cash and get a DDR4 based Intel or Ryzen system.

Hey Kanewolf,

Thanks for the comment, I do appreciate your feedback. The idea behind this post is exactly that, where I want to start fresh with a new motherboard, CPU, GPU and RAM with up to date parts. I can upgrade the PSU if necessary and the cooler, but those are 2 compatible components that will work with up to date internals. Some side notes:

No plans to overclock any time soon but would like to be prepared in case I change my mind

RGB friendly

Full ATX form factor is preferred

I live in Canada, and from what the local franchise is selling product for, it looks as if a good build designed to handle editing 4k video and and gaming with decent graphics, I am still ballparking around about 1000 dollars. A Ryzen 7 2700x, Asus ROG Strix x470-f board, and 16GB RAM puts me in that ballpark. I am looking to create a build that will last more than 3 years of work and play .
