so the newly announced 1080Ti has weaker clock speed than 1080?

AFAIK there is a pretty direct correlation between clock speed and FPS no? Of course that's far from the only aspect that counts when it comes to performance, but can anyone explain to me why would Nvidia make this seemingly quite important part weaker when all other areas are being improved?

Actually no. Clock speeds mean very little unless you are comparing two identical chips.

It was way more CUDA cores, closer to the number in the Titan X Pascal than the standard 1080. The additional cores are going to be a huge performance boost, even if the clock speed isn't quite as high. The Titan X has even lower clock speeds, but it still outperforms the 1080 due to its core count.
