I'm a bit unsure about all this so if anyone can help...

Is this right?

CS 1.5 (retail & web versions) is now defunct since the WON authentication
was closed down?

CS 1.6 Steam was the latest incarnation of CS until Source came along?

Can you play Steam on a LAN yet without key authentication yet or do you
still need the LAN only version of Steam?

Are Steam and Source compatible in any way or will Steamers have to play on
Steam servers and Sourcers play on Source servers and never the twain shall
meet (ie 2 completely seperate games)

Do maps from 1.5/Steam require reworking to look pretty in Source?

Can you play Source LAN only? Our LAN will be able to authenticate all
players but in such a manner that Mrs Binky will not be happy

Any other issues that clarify the current situation gratefully received.

not intirely, 1.6 was only available through steam (me thinks)

Yes and no. you can play CS 1.6 with the steam Lan only hack (not sure if
it's still available)

I disconected from my BB connection then fire'd up steam and then whent to
CS:S and created a server with no problems. Then connected to a game with
another comp.

Steam is not a game it is a software delivery platform and
authentication system. CS:Source uses steam as does CS1.6 but CS1.6 is
a different game to CS:Source and they are incompatible.

Ok, cheers.

Does that mean that all the maps have to be re-coded for Source then?

Some of them but it seems office is missing which is a shame, not sure
about the rest or if there are new ones as I've only played the beta
so far (damn lack of broadband where I live) but the new ones are the
same layout just stunning looking

The office is definitely there, shooting the PC's is the best part of
the game!

DVD.

From what I can see Bob is that you pays your $40 upgrade with the ATI
coupon discount only. It say's nothing about a discount from Silver to Gold.

Hope this clears things up.

I ordered of the net through Play.com so I get a hard copy as well as the
net version. Also the bonus is that I get to play HL2 before I get the Game
from Play.com in the post.

Thanks Warty,

I think you meant to reply to the discussion right below this one. Anyway,
I'm gonna sit patiently for a while to see what Valve does. I'm sure
they're monitoring this newsgroup and their own forum closely, which have
both been hammered by my questions about upgrading.

Posting on the Steam forums has been pretty counter-productive so far. The
audience there seems to be pretty young and/or hostile. Thanks again.
