i had my temp limit to 90c and i accidently left my fan curve at 25% so does that mean that when the gpu reached 90c it would start powering itself down to not go any higher?
A normal resting GPU temp is about 30-45c depending. Lower is obviously better. It can be lower with a closed or custom loop liquid cooling solution. I have a fairly aggressive curve
because I don't want my temp to exceed 55c. I have the
EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3 Hybrid GFX card so my idle temp. stays a little cooler(24c). The temp. limit is where the PC will start to throttle its performance. Let's say my GPU gets to 56c. The core clock will drop to 1987MHz. The more it exceeds the target temp. the more throttling will happen which reduces its performance in favor of less heat.
To be clear the user can set their own temp. limit. Only advanced users that understand temp. and voltage limits should unlink or adjust those.
The temp and voltage limits are very closely related to GPU boost 3.0 and that is where I get my 55C max temp. limit controlled by the fans. I don't want my GFX card throttling anything so I avoid the limits that would effect GPU Boost 3.0. 90C is getting close to possibly causing thermal damage. At 100C it will most likely cause a thermal shutdown. Those are safety limits set by the manufacturer to protect your investment.
