Any reason you want a g34 socket proccesor? They are really slow and you can get a much better piece of hardware for the money a board+cpu would cost.

I have an Opteron 6174 12 core chip. I have 48gig ddr3 a dual gpu card 800watt psu and figured why not. How can specs like that be slow

Depends on what you want to do tho.

Rendering is mostly on the gpu nowadays unless you need a slower cpu renderer for some reason. Photoshop needs a decent gpu to not chugg (it still will due to very slow single core performance). Generic tasks will be fine.

Do keep in mind that the ddr3 has to be ecc ram.
A core i7 2600 is quite a bit better compared to this cpu in every way. Even an old i7 860 or 920 will be a bit better.

I have found a board that takes both ECC and None ECC. So it doesn't have too be server memory. Id may as well go Ryzen

You might as well. Most boards go 150 or up. Thats over half way for a basic ryzen 1200 + board + 8gb ddr4

That's my only issues with Ryzen. New chips new prices to follow. I'd get Ryzen 5 1600x ddr4 is over priced likely 16gb of 2133. And a good board I like MSI. Spend £500+. It's nuts

Most good boards are around 70 pounds. The problem with the opteron is that it's something nobody wanted back in the day simply because it was so slow. Nowadays it's way worse even.
