socket754 = no DDR400?

Hey hey

So a friend of mine just build himself a new system. Gigabyte nforce3 250 (non GB) and an Athlon3400+

He has two sticks of XMS DDR400, however, he cant get them to run at 400mhz (200) bios keeps knocking it back to 333mhz (166)
He has contacted gigabyte tech support and they emailed him the following..
Dear customer,

"It's the known issue.
According the last BIOS Guide for AMD socket 754 from AMD,
When two DDR400 Double sided memory are installed, the memory speed should be set as DDR333. The table is attached for your reference.
Unfortunately, there is no update/work around for it.
Thank you for using Gigabyte products.
Gigabyte technical support team."

Does anyone buy that? Sounds like they are saying socket 754 does not support two sticks of DDR400...
Just wondering if anyone else has had an issue with 400mhz and socket 754.

It's not that Socket754 don't support DDR400, it's more "some combination" of DDR400 module will not work at DDR400 speed.

You will understand why the Gigabyte board act like that. Gigabyte stricly follow the AMD memory rules for Athlon 64. The best manufacturer for Athlon 64 memory compatibility is ASUS.

It's tricky to use words like <b><font color=green>AMD</font color=green></b> or <b><font color=blue>Intel</font color=blue></b> in a signature some users could think your are biased.

Actually, the best manufacturer for A64 memory compatability is...wait, the best MANUFACTURER'S ARE SiS (with their 755) and nVidia (with their nForce3 250).

It's a chipset issue more than anything else. Just one more reason why I kept telling people ALL these "top end" boards were junk, they were based on top of the line garbage chipsets. The biggest lumps float to the top.

It's very odd that your particular nForce3 250 board has this problem. I say that because Anandtech showed both the nForce3 250 and SiS 755 chipsets working without that issue. But they were testing different boards.

As for the comment on Asus boards, I haven't even SEEN an Asus board using either the nForce3 250 OR the SiS 755. And the memory problems with the nForce3 150 and K8T800 are quite notorious by now.
