You haven't mentioned which make/model modem this is.
For example, the Hummingbird V.92 modem, built off the SmartLink
modem chipset, has a number of postings on the net about how users
cannot hear anything from the modem, trying new drivers doesn't help,
running the "Modem Helper", I kid you not, that is what they call it,
locks up the computer tight. Etc.
Thus far I have confirmed that it will take the phone line off-hook.
But beyond that it seems to be a dead end, as far as XP goes.
Maybe there was a reason that a brand new V.92 modem with fax and
voicemail and call waiting and blah blah blah was $9 at Fry's.
