Software for changing movie aspect ratio

I was just wodering if there was any software or way of changing the aspect ratio of movies so i dont get letterbox format. my laptop has a 4:3 lcd and i want to watch movies on the ENTIRE screen. I also dont want to loose the edge of the picture if possible. I have a tv card and can watch tv on that in the entire screen on that. What format is that. i dont mind having the thin look of a tv.

Standard television is 4:3 and HDTV is 16:9.

Check your playing software... if there is an option to show in 4:3, it will be there. If not, then don't buy widescreen DVDs.
