I bought a Cambridge Audio music file server and a Buffalo NAS to store the files. I've never had a setup like this before. I have both set up, mostly. My home network sees the NAS but the Cambridge Audio doesn't.

I put some music files on the NAS. The documentation says that I need some sort of software on the NAS to make the Cambridge Audio see it. I think it may be UPnP. I called Buffalo about setting up UPnP on the NAS but they said that I only need to do that if I want my NAS to be seen outside my home network, which I don't want to do.

But do I need some software on the NAS? What kind, or do you have some recommendations?

UPNP( or DLNA, not exactly the same though) has nothing to do with outside world access.

It's a protocol used between media player and media server.

Turn it on and see if it works.

Windows can see Buffalo NAS likely Buffalo's SMB support is turned on by default. Android does not support SMB however, unless you buy and install those paid apps.

Please post a product link to your Cambridge music server/ or player?

I couldn't find out how to do that. I did reset the NAS. There are a lot of options that I don't know if I should turn them on or off. The manual is 147 pages and full of things that I don't understand. There is a quick-start quite, but it just tells you how to plug it in and turn it on.

I've emailed Cambridge Audio to ask for more help. But they are in England and I'm in the US, so at best I get a reply the next day.

Thanks, I went through page 100-104. Some of the info didn't match exactly, and I'm not sure that selecting a folder to share worked, because when I went back in, it was unchecked.

But I've gotten farther. and it says that it is playing from the NAS, but it isn't actually. Now I think I need to contact Cambridge Audio again.

Are you trying to play MP3? MP4? An MP3 is just a container file type. The actual compression of the data may make it not compatible.
For example the Cambridge Audio MX10 -- https://www.cambridgeaudio.com/usa/en/products/hi-fi/mx/mxn10 says it supports ALAC, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, DSD (x512), WMA, MP3, AAC, HE AAC, AAC+, OGG Vorbis audio files.
I would make sure a file plays when on a thumb drive connected to the USB port. Then if you attempt to play that same file, via the network and it fails, you know it it not an issue with the file format.
