Hi,

I have an HP PC with a dead MB. Am planning to replace with one with an intel CPU (Old was AMD). PC was prebuilt so no install disk. Have install disk for windows XP and upgrade disk to upgrade to windows 7. Can I do this? Don't want to shell out $$ for windows 10. Thanks for any suggestions.

Only if they are retail copies and not OEM's. If the Windows XP disk is retail and not attached to another computer, yes it will validate, but if the Windows 7 upgrade disk is an OEM, no it will not validate if it has already been used.

There are ways around it, but if you take a look on Amazon you'll find some very cheap genuine copies of Windows 7 for sale; you can buy a genuine copy as a pre-owned disk with a working license/activation code for under $40. You could probably find one even cheaper than that on eBay, but watch out for fake copies.
