Soldering advice (Beginner)

i am desoldering a small chip on my 3ds do i have to use a desoldering pump or can i heat the pins with the iron and remove it without a mess
 
Solution
You need someway to remove the solder, because as soon as you melt one leg and go to melt another leg, the last leg will re-solidify again. I would say its impossible to remove without a pump or wick (or some other trick), especially for a beginner.

I am assuming by chip you mean something that has more then 2 contacts/legs. In that case, you need a pump or a wick. Its very difficult to remove a chip with more then 2 legs without some way to remove the solder, since its difficult to melt the solder on all the legs at the same time.

Thanks I ordered a pump it's coming today I just wanted to know if I had to desolder it
