Hey there, I have a question regarding Cpu and Mainboard compatibility as I'm fairly new to this whole thing and get overwhelmed easily and friends have been telling me different things about this stuff.

I have an intel core i7 6700k cpu and am currently looking for a replacement mainboard for it, my one friend said i couldn't use this (https://www.amazon.com/MSI-MPG-Z390-PRO-Motherboard/dp/B07HM4LVTN ) mainboard for example because, even though it uses the same socket (LGA 1151) it has a different chipset (made for kabylake/coffeelake) and therefore wouldn't work with my cpu. Now my other friend who worked in building pcs before sent me this mainboard (https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/B360 Pro4/index.asp ) and said it would work with my cpu despite the page stating it was made for kabylake/coffeelake cpus?

i'm just really confused and would appreciate if anyone could help, sorry if this sounds stupid lmao

Your friend is correct, the socket is not the only thing that dictates compatibility for motherboards/CPUs unfortunately, and it's a common error we see on the forums. A 6700K would NOT work on that board.

Now this friend is NOT correct. The B360 is the...

Now this friend is NOT correct. The B360 is the same problem, same socket, different chipset. The 6700K would also not work on this board.

For the record, if you are unsure, use https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ and put in your current CPU, and then it will only allow you to select compatible motherboards. But not all of those boards might be compatible out of the box (they may need a BIOS update for example) but PCPP will warn you of this when you select the parts.

Motherboard: ASRock B250 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($80.40 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus PRIME Z270-P ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($145.29 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110-D3A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($75.56 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock Z170A-X1/3.1 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($69.99 @ Newegg)

Alright, thanks for clarifying! I'll look into it some more!
