OK, I just finished building an entry level(?) gaming rig - still waiting for my 1060.
two questions,

what are the "breaking points" to determine low, entry, medium, high and ultra gaming rig titles

And my primary question, is this i7-4790k GPU a decent gaming chip? I thought it was a basic one, bought a z230 work station for $150 and parted out the i7 and slapped it on a MSI Z97 motherbord. So when making a blog on how to make a budget gaming rig, I was surprise to find, I can't find that chip anywhere for under $300!!!!

Did I find a diamond in the rough as they say?

Thanks

yes, i think you did.

4790k is a very strong chip, to put it to perspective, it's able to compete the i5 8400 and ryzen 1500x/1600.

only issue is that it uses the now obsolete ddr3 ram and limited upgrade path (non in your case, since this is the top model)

as for breaking points,

gaming rig break points. desktop only.
low:
any system running intel onboard graphics or similar.
regardless of your CPU, it not going to run most game.

entry.
cpu: pentium g4560, intel 7 gen or lower i3 chips, ryzen 3 cpu,
gpu: 1030, 1050, amd apu or similar
you can meet the mini requirement for most game, but that's it. you can run most recent game at low or med setting at 720p. low on 1080p.

medium will be:
intel i5, amd r5
gpu: 1050ti - 1060 6gb, rx470/480/570/580 or similar.you can run most recent game at med to high on 1080p.

high will be
intel 6 or later i7, ryzen 7 or higher.
gpu: 1070 to 1080 ti, rx vega. you can run most recent game at high setting at 1080p. med to high on 1440. you can also consider getting a 144 hz monitor at this point.

should be an ultra high.
CPU: intel i9, threadripper
GPU: cf of fury or vega, sli of 1070 or higher, titan x,xp,xpp, titan v.
most game at high for 2k, med to high for 4k

thanks guys that was very helpful. Just to add a few, Im upgrading from a i5-650 (dell), and combined with a lowly GTX750SC 1GB (which sadly for this new rig I still have), I can actually play witcher 3 on med settngs with 30-40fps with 8GB (NEW rig has 20gb), So the 750 holds its own for me, but does make the system pretty hot.

Well sweet deal on the i7, someone told me that was old, but the prob is, I do not want too new of a chip, because I can't stand w10 (do not debate, will love to debate that in a diff thread), so I have to keep a 6th gen or less - and I think this one is a 4th gen. I may be wrong. so thats why I stayed with the (supposedly) old i7 :)

Cheers!!

750 is still a great entry level gpu, similar to 1030, my friend plays overwatch @ 60 fps 1080p with weaker oem gt 745
you can pbbly get 30 fps in pubg at very low, 1080p.

you will see a huge improvement, once you get the 1060 6gb.
