Question [SOLVED] GA-X79-UD5 stays on POST splash... any advice?

Hi,

Got a GA-X79-UD5 today. Goes to the POST splash screen. Keyboard lights work when pressed, like Numlock and Capslock. When pressing delete to enter BIOS nothing happens. It gives a single beep as if POST passed but stays on the spash. After about 15 seconds it does another beep and again later a third and then the screen goes dead, but the MB stays powerd on. Used a USB and then a PS/2 keyboard to test.

Checked power cables to be well connected, reset the BIOS, changed memory. On the backup BIOS it displays only the red American Megatrends logo with no white text. Does the same single beep and later again and eventually cuts display.

CMOS battery shows 2.8v when I took it out and tested it. MB does the same with battery removed. Battery replaced, same issue.

Changed CPU, changed RAM, same thing.

Using a 850w PSU that is also used on a B550 with a 3900X and 3070Ti.

Any advice will be awesome.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Got a GA-X79-UD5 today.
If this was picked up off of Ebay, was the listing stated as for parts?

As my colleague has asked, we'll need to know what you've paired with the motherboard prior to creating this thread.

Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time. It'd help us two fold if we also learned of all the other parts you've swapped the initial parts with. Which slots are the rams populating on the board?

If you have access to a CH341A BIOS programming toolkit, might be worthwhile t flash the BIOS to the latest version and see if that was what held you up.

Does not look like the person resolved it.

Have you gone through the troubleshooting procedure that starts on page 106 of the manual?

Thank you for the response.
I have and it failes here:

Press <Delete> to enter BIOS Setup. Select "Load Optimized De-
faults." Select "Save & Exit Setup" to save changes and exit BIOS
Setup."

What is strange is, ctrl+alt+del works and restarts the MB. The Numlock and Capslock works. Pressing del or F8 or any key does not enter the BIOS though. Unfortunately that part does not have a "No" option in the manual.

I suspect that the mobo or CPU is toast. Nothing ever appears on screen. Correct?
When swicthed on it goes to the POST splash screen.

On the backup BIOS it displays only the red American Megatrends logo with no white text. Does the same single beep and later again and eventually cuts display.

So, something does appear on screen.

Try this. Place hand on keyboard, pressing and holding down several keys. Power on continuing to hold keys down.

Intent is to trigger keyboard error to possibly allow access to the BIOS.
Tried that now and nothing happens except the splash screen. Strange that if you keep pressing keys you can hear that slight beep sound the keypresses make on the speaker for every key you press. Like mentioned, even crtl+alt+del works. Just wont enter BIOS.
Also tested now with a third keyboard (PS/2), same issue.

Example of what it looks like. As you can see, no text. And is does give the single beep as if POST passed, but it stays there. On the backup BIOS it is just the Gigabyte splash screen instead of this one.

Given the age of these components, I am still of the opinion that either the motherboard or CPU is defective..

Do you have access to another compatible CPU to swap for testing?
I did change CPU... but now I tried something odd and it is working perfectly to only present another problem.

It works when I use an ancient Geforce 8400GS.

Any idea what I can do to get it to work on a more modern card?

Thank you for all the help.

After installing the 8400GS and loading default settings, the board is running fine. Even with all the 64GB installed and the Titan Black, it still POSTs and can acces the BIOS.

Thank you for all the info and support.
